Li Zhi, of SISU’s School of English Studies won the first prize after three days of rigorous competition.A Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) student on March 22 won first place in the 21st Century Coca-Cola Cup, the 20th National English-Speaking Competition that started in May 2014 with 100,000 students from Chinese colleges and universities.
Li Zhi, of SISU’s School of English Studies won the first prize after three days of rigorous competition. Li’s performance was unanimously lauded by expert judges from the English-Speaking Union (ESU), British Council, Translator’s Department of Chinese Foreign Ministry, the China Daily newspaper and world-class universities.
The 20th National English-Speaking Competition’s national final still had 18 divisions after strict selections for almost a year on the Internet, on campuses, in regions, and in national quarterfinals. Its components included a prepared speech, an impromptu speech, and a live quiz.
The competition, hosted by China Daily, and organized by 21st Century English Education Media, aims to deepen Chinese students’ understanding of the English language and culture, and to select talents qualifying for international speech contests. Winners this year will compete in the International English Speech Contest 2015 to be held in London in May.
The competition, founded in 1996, is supported by authoritative organizations for English teaching and testing, which have included English-Speaking Union (ESU), Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Educational Testing Service (ETS), Navitas-Australian Campus Network (ACN) and British Council.
In recent years, SISU’s School of English Studies has called for reforms in English teaching through a series of academic speeches, English Culture Festivals and English professional competitions
