Portugal’s ambassador to China on May 5 honored Ms. Xu Yixing, professor of Portuguese studies at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), with one of Portugal’s National Honour Medals, presented to Xu for her contributions to education cooperation between China and Portugal.

Xu, deputy director of SISU’s School of European and Latin American Studies and director of teaching and research for the Department of Portuguese Studies, is the youngest Chinese teacher to win the medal. She is also the first non-Portuguese winner during the presidency of Cavaco Silva (March 2006 - present).

Xu has been heavily involved in the Portuguese major’s curriculum development, teaching, and related international communication, including hosting President Silva’s visit to SISU in May 2014.

The Medal honours distinguished contributors to the development of Portuguese language, culture, education and society. Between 1929 and 2014, 4,427 Portuguese and 3,391 non-Portuguese people have received the award.

Other Chinese winners of the Medal include Guo Jiading, China’s former ambassador to Portugal; professors Zhao Hongling and Zhou Hanjun from Beijing Foreign Studies University; and Liu Aihua, programme director of Shanghai Oriental Art Center.
