Last week, the Consul General of France in Shanghai, Emmanuel Lenain, held a special ceremony at his residence and awarded the Order of Academic Palms to Mr. Cao Deming (Commander), Mr. Xiao Yunshang (Officer) and Mr. Chen Wei (Knight), three professors of French and Francophone Studies at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU).
Emmanuel Lenain said the Order of Academic Palms is indebted to the three professors’ outstanding contribution to French education and cultural exchanges in China, and to their collaboration on Sino-French scientific research.
“It is a great honor to receive the Order of Academic Palms and it is also a reward for SISU’s long-term efforts in French and Francophone studies,” said SISU President Cao Deming, who was awarded the order of ‘Commander’ this time, becoming one of the few Chinese nationals who obtain the highest level of this honor.
“SISU plays an important role in the educational relation between France and China, in that our French Department has nurtured many talents working in different industries related to French language and culture in recent years”, Cao said. Previously, there have been 6 professors at SISU who received the Order, including one Officer and five Knights.
The Order of Academic Palms, or Ordre des Palmes académiques, is an Order of Chivalry of France for distinguished academics and figures in the world of culture and education. Originally a decoration founded by Emperor Napoleon to honor eminent members of the University of Paris, it was changed into its current form as an Order in 1955. The Order of Academic Palms has comprised three grades: Commander, Officer and Knight. Decisions on nominations and promotions are decided by the Minister of Education of France.
HEC Paris and SISU’s other partner institutions in France presented their congratulations to the three winners and SISU’s School of French and Francophone Studies.
