ISU debate team won the “Dream Cup”, a Shanghai debate competition on Oct. 27, 2018, breaking its record 20 years ago.

Zhu Yixuan, Wu Jincheng, Shao Zeliang, Wu Guoyan, Zhang Jingyi, Guo Zhengyi, Jing Difei, Li Jian and Song Wenxin are the nine debaters of SISU’s team. They have beaten 57 teams and 664 debaters from other Shanghai colleges.

SISU won the final debate themed on “To build a global city, Shanghai should focus more on humanistic spirit or innovative spirit”.

The Dream Cup, co-hosted by the Communist Youth League of China's Shanghai Committee and Shanghai Student Union, boasts to be the largest debate contest at area level in recent years.

The Dream Cup aims at raising student’s awareness of the city development and social problems through debating. “It encourages more people to think about social topics,” said Song Wenxin, the first debater in the final.

Guo Zhengyi, the president of SISU Debate Association, regards debating as “a platform for public discussion”. She said it will benefit students today who don’t have many chances to discuss deeply.

Li Tianyi, a member of the Association, said, “Debating is not a mainstream activity in SISU, while the winning has helped to attract attention to debating.”

The Debate Association was in lack of manpower, so it was hard for them to organize teams for different contests at the same time.

“Not only do we hope more students to take part in debating, but also we expect the debating culture to take shape in SISU. We hope more SISU students will come to watch a debate contest” said Li.

About 40 students have applied for SISU Debate Association since the champion news spread.

SISU Debate Association plans to hold intramural contests regularly and participate larger-scale competitions such as The World Mandarin Debating Championship next year, aiming at achieving a new record.

“Our ultimate goal is to enter International Chinese Debating Competition, the highest honor for a college debate team” said Guo, the president of SISU Debate Association.
