SISU Professor Chai Mingjiong is elected Vice President of CIUTI Council

n behalf of the Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation(GIIT) of Shanghai International Studies University(SISU), Dean Zhang Ailing and Professor Chai Mingjiong were invited to attend the plenary session of Conférence Internationale permanente dInstituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes (CIUTI) in Moscow National Normal University late this May.

Professor Chai Mingjiong was elected to the board member of CIUTI by the highest votes again in the every three-year-election and as the Vice President of its council. Chai will establish an Asia-Pacific working group, which would be located in SISU.

The previous council of CIUTI was elected by the General Assembly at University of Antwerp (UAMS) in Belgium in 2013. In 2013, SISU was already a member of CIUTI, and its GIIT has made great achievements in the teaching and research of interpreting and translation. Hannelore Lee-Jahnke, the Chair of CIUTI at that time, with Professor Martin Forstner invited representatives of GIIT to attend the council election. Chai Mingjiong, Dean of GIIT at that time became its board member at the highest votes, which showed a growing interest of international peers in China and their recognition of GIIT.

At the end of April 2014, the General Assembly of CIUTI was held at SISU. Dr. Jiang Feng, the Chair of the University Council of SISU met with Chairman Hannelore Lee-Jahnke and Secretary Martin Forstner. At the opening ceremony, Professor Yang Li, Vice President of SISU stated support tothe work of CIUTI in China. Professor Cao Deming, President of SISU expressed the support again during his keynote speech at the Annual Forum of CIUTI in Geneva in January, 2015.

On February 26, 2015, Chai Mingjiong re-enrolled and participated in the new council election and was re-elected as the board member, as well as the vice-president of CIUTI council on May 30.

SISU's GIIT offers translation and interpreting teaching of world-class and won the world’s highest rating after the assessment of International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), which was also the only educational institution for professional conference interpretation in China among the world's top 15 in the world. At the same time, SISU was the earliest to establish cooperative relationship with the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) among Chinese universities.

The international federation of university institute of translation was found in 1961, and holds a high reputation in the international translation circle and other language unions. CIUTI includes 41 top Schools of Translation from 19 countries, such as École de Traduction et d'Interprétation (ETI) of University of Geneva, Institut Supérieur d’Interprétation et de Traducti (ESIT) and Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS).
