okyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) in mid-April established its Global Japan Office in Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) to promote educational cooperation between the two universities.

Hirotaka Tateishi, president of TUFS, visited SISU to unveil a plaque at his university’s new office there, and met with SISU President Cao Deming, during which the two universities agreed to continue exchange programs, cooperative teaching and collaborative research.

Tateishi, meeting with SISU University Council Chair Jiang Feng, emphasized that his university has persistently focused on internationalized education since its founding and its single faculty of international studies was divided into two parts – language culture and international sociology – in a 2012 reform, leading to the form of double disciplines – language studies and area studies. Tateishi also called for enhancing multifaceted academic communication between SISU and his university’s Center for Asian Studies.

President Cao said SISU is responsible for developing workable ideas for China’s going global strategy, by making the best use of the university’s resources through acquiring first-hand global information and cultivating inter-disciplinary talents with strong skills in cross-cultural communication. Therefore, he suggested, SISU, TUFS and relevant Korean universities can work together to prepare highly skilled translators in global affairs and researchers in international and area studies.

Tateishi also spoke to students and teachers from SISU’s School of Japanese Studies on his experiences in bridging different cultures.

TUFS’s new office at SISU was covered by news media outlets such as International Channel Shanghai (ICS).
