T

he 2015 Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony was held in Shanghai this Wednesday. This is the first time it is hosted in China. SISU alumna, Ms. Chen Chen, a star anchor on Dragon TV of Shanghai Media Group (SMG), hosted the ceremony with widely-acclaimed British film and television actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

In their opening statement, Chen asked Benedict whether she could call him 'Curly Fu', his lovely Chinese nickname given by his fans in China - for his floppy hair and his role as Sherlock Holmes, as 'fu' is short for Holmes in Chinese shortening. The Sherlock Star answered in a good sense of humor, “You can call me 'curly' whatever you like.”

Chen graduated from SISU’s School of Journalism and Communication in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in international journalism and a masters’ degree in communication studies. She was the former president of SISU Students’ Union and had won many awards for scholarship during her years in SISU. In addition to her daily TV programs, she appeared as a hostess in a series of bilingual ceremonies and conferences, including the annual Shanghai International Film Festival.

The Laureus World Sports Awards is the premier honors event on the international sporting calendar. Since its inception in 2000, the annual Awards celebrate the most remarkable men and women from the world of sport throughout the year. The Awards consist of 7 categories, with six nominations in each category, which have set up some eye-catching confrontations.

At this year's event, Yao Ming, another SISU alumnus, became one of the newest Laureus Academy Members. Yao is already a winner of a Laureus Award, having been presented with the Laureus Newcomer of the Year Award in 2003 in recognition of his impact on basketball in the NBA. Yao said: “I don’t want to do anything in big movements. I think we can’t always pursue the end goal or score, we need to focus on the process and the detail, we will achieve great things.”
