“My name is Paula Wang. Actually, I was part of the SISU faculty for a couple of years long time ago. I got my undergraduate degree in English Literature. I moved back to China 3 years ago, in April 2014 to join Microsoft China. And later last year, I joined Google Greater China. So, basically, thanks for professor Yu, and a bunch of other folks and my dear friend Zhao Qiuyan. She and I shared a doom when I was much younger. Thanks to their help, I am able to stand before you and share some of my journey with you.
I moved to the US in 1997 when HongKong was transferred back to China. I remember vividly that flight… I guess there are several defining moments in your life. That is one of the defining moments of my life.
And then I had my MBA in International Marketing and Finance, and started my MBA internship at Chicago. Then I joined a hardware company-Compaq. Not many of you know about it probably today. I worked in Houston for a few years and that’swhere I met professor Yu again at one of the events at the Chinese Embassy. Nowadays the world is getting smaller. After so many years, tonight we get to see each other again. So, Honor!
After Compaq, I moved to Washington State to join Microsoft. It was there that I started to learn more about the software space. And then due to some family issues, I moved to San Diego, California a few years later to join Sony Electronics, which is part of the consumer electronics industry. I tell you this not to show that I am very experienced, not at all. I am saying this to show that everything is evolving really fast.”
Three Revolutionary Changes三大革新性趋势——AI人工智能,Big Data大数据，Cloud Computering云计算
“As we look forward, there are three mega trends: Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Cloud Computing.
Artificial Intelligence: Last year, March 9th, 2016, Google Deepmind’s AlphaGo, an artificial robot, won the game of Go, 4-1, to Lee SeDol. That was the defining moment for the general purpose AI to be known by the general public. But the reality is that AI has been in the works for the past 50 years. So it takes a long time for a new technology to see the light of the day and to be put into general application. So while we think, today, internet is changing everything, like how you live, how you work… In the foreseeable future, AI will be the new platform, and there will be no business that will have not be AI-related.
Big Data: When you think about Big Data, you will think about Taobao, Tmall, Didi, JD, all the platform business. For the buyers, the suppliers, the users, the partners, everybody involved in the eco system, data gives us insight, and the data helps to predict the behaviors of them.
Cloud Computing: As many of you have observed, what cloud does is to remove all the hard work for the users. Before cloud computing, if you want to start a company, the first thing you have to consider is how many servers you have to buy from Dell, HP, or IBM. That was the old days. Today, this is very easy. The barrier to entry has been lowered significantly.
The three trends are kind of intertwined. If you look at the evolution of technology. Almost by the decade, every ten years or so, we have new revolutionary changes. In the 1980s, there was PC. In the 1990s, there was the Internet. In the 2000s, there was mobile internet. In addition to the evolution of technology, the geographical evolution is taking place as well. So the power is shifting into Asia. China developers have earned great respect in the global market.”
Two Organization Types
“Globalization happens when you already have some certain level of skills. You build a successful business in one market, you get more customer segments, and further you get to go globally. This was the past. Today, globalization is from Day one, literally Day One. As Jeff Bezos (CEO of Amazon) recently said that Day One means an obsession with customer and quality of decision-making. You have to quickly make the direct decisions. Here, we have to mention the hierarchical and open organization models. In traditional hierarchy structure, there is vertical decision-making. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, I am sure you’ve heard about the recent United Airlines incident. This is a typical traditional company. But in an open organization, there is inclusive decision-making and empowerment of the front-liners. ”
Future Job Skills
"How do we stay relevant in a highly AI-driven future? In the future, there are a few job skills which will be highly demanded. Most skills are soft skills, like your cognitive ability, your creativity, your imagination, your ability to collaborate with others. Even in the traditional companies, like GE, Honeywell, even Japan Airlines, they are going through the digital transformation. They are trying to figure out. How to do HR in a digital way? How do they recognize that all their employees are digitally capable? How can they digitally empower to make their employees motivated engaged? ”
